Sports Awards 2020

The September meeting of Havering Sports Council decided to abandon this year's annual Sports Awards, with the exception of the Doug Riden Lifetime Achievement Award (this category sponsored by McDonald's Restaurants of Romford).

There have been so few opportunities for local sports persons, Clubs and officials to shine, with some having no meaningful sports at all.

A crackdown on licensed premises, when introduced just over a couple of weeks' ago, was planned for up to 6 months.  Our function is usually in February and having many attending would make social distancing impossible - and a rule is no bar service in licensed premises, meaning folk have to be seated at tables and order drinks from waiters/bar staff while seated.

By retaining "The Doug Riden Lifetime Achievement" Award we keep continuity and also retain the one award not assessed on the past 12 months' achievement.  It's minuted that "The Doug Riden Lifetime Achievement Award" is to be presented to a Havering resident who has served local sport for a minimum of 15 years.  This can be presented before any monthly meeting, whenever resumed, or even before our AGM at a traditional pre-meeting buffet.

THE DOUG RIDEN LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (Sponsored by McDonald's Restaurants of Romford)

This is an award for a person who's given a lifetime of service to sport in Havering. It's named in honour of the late Doug Riden, who died in 2002.  Mr.Riden was a President of Havering Sports Council and heavily involved in a number of sports throughout the Borough.
