Havering Athletics Club
300 athletes, half from the club, competed in annual Spring Open meeting at Hornchurch Stadium on Sun 8th April. Club's young athletes' team had a big victory in their first Eastern Young Athletes League fixture -Bury St Edmunds while U13 and U15 got 4th place against top teams in the South in opening Youth Development League Premier Division meeting- Bracknell on Sat, despite some regular distance runners resting for London Mini Marathon the next day. Sports Council's Junior Sports Competitor winner Max Law improved the club U17 javelin record and Lola Kuponiyi has twice improved her club U15 & U17 shot record.
Havering Borough teams at yesterday's London Boroughs Mini Marathon, mainly comprising club athletes, had wins for both U13 girls and U17 Men's teams. Club celebrates 50th anniversary of its formation from Hornchurch Harriers and Romford Athletic Club in May 1968, with event at Hornchurch Stadium on Mon 7th May. Teams of club athletes will take on the World Marathon Challenge with 26 athletes running 26 miles marathon distance in a series of 105 400m laps!
Havering 90 Joggers/Parkrun
15 members made it safely round the London Marathon in 3 -7 hours in spite of the heat.
Have been advertising for the missing European lottery winner .Had 179 runners at Harrow Lodge and 300 runners at Raphael Park recently.
Queried Park Run route can continue whilst building works take place at Harrow Lodge for new Sports Centre.
Upminster Hockey Club
The 2017/18 season is now complete. Easter 7’s, took place on grass outside Clubhouse. First time for many minis and colts used to playing on astroturf. Annual dinner dance at new Ingrebourne Links Course, Rainham, attended by 120 members and guests. Men’s International Tour, this year to Sardinia, is this weekend. New this summer is a 6 a side Mixed/ Intra club League.
Upminster Bowls Club
The Club is sad to report the recent deaths of 3 Past Presidents: Ken Grote; Peter Drewe and Ted Boreham all whom made a significant contribution to the Upminster Bowling Club.
74 members attended an evening pre-season buffet and the Green reopened, next day, Sat 21st April with 53 members playing in a Mixed Drive.
Work on some parts of the Green is continuing and it has been temporarily re-configured until the new turf is settled. Several members have entered for National, County and local competitions which start shortly. The club has 6 new members so far this year and we are all looking forward to an excellent season’s bowling.
SYM Sailing Club
The return of water (instead of ice) allowed more activity in April including 9 members attending our safety boat refresher training and 20 taking part in a day of racing.
There are an encouraging number of prospective new members this month.
Havering Tennis Club
Currently waiting for fixture list. There is a charity event over the Bank Holiday and a tournament using wooden rackets later in the year. Contact club for more details.
LBH Sports development
Weekly Friday Athletics sessions started at Hornchurch Stadium for school years 5 & 6.New Ladies Beginners Golf Session starts 24/4/18 at Upminster Mini Golf Course. Virgin London Mini Marathon saw Haverings’ best runners selected from trials last month, represent the borough, with fantastic individual results, especially from Natalie Sewell - 2nd in the U13s Girls & Yusif Bizimana - 1st in U17 boys out of all London Boroughs and Boys U13s - 12th place, Boys & Girls U15s both finishing 6th place, Girls U17 finished 3rd And Girls U13 & Boys U17 finishing in 1st place. Easter programme saw over 350 young people take part is sports related activity including para activity for those people with a disability. Currently working on May and summer programme. New Hornchurch Sports Centre – Council planning approved – has now to be signed off by the
Mayor/GLA, Start new build in August 2018 and new centre open in Jan 2020.
Summer camps are scheduled and there is a Swimathon happening this Saturday.
Winter leagues HDSA finished 3rd Div 4. Broxhill Juniors finished last Div 4. Havering Youth Games- Broxhill Juniors got 6 medals. Clout Shoot at Woodford, Broxhill Juniors 1st, 2nd, 3rd. HDSA Won 3rd.
Hornchurch Cricket Club
Season started on Sat 21st April. Took 2 days to get ground ready due to wet weather and height of grass.
Sat, 1st XI lost to Bexley 1st XI by 84 runs. 2nd XI lost to Bexley 2nd XI by 1 run. All friendlies.
Sun, 1st XI beat Ilford by 8 wickets. First 100 scored on Sunday. League Cup 28th April playing Orsett 1st & 2nd XI.
Havering-atte-Bower Cricket Club
Havering-atte-Bower CC began on Sunday 15th April with a game against Spartan, lost by 33 runs. On Sunday 22nd April against Chigwell, lost by 130 runs.
On Saturday 21st April played the Andrew Dent memorial game President’s XI against the Chairman’s XI. It was a fine day for cricket and the chairman’s XI won by 72 runs. In the evening we had a quiz night won by a team from Clemence Hoar Cummings the accountancy firm that Andrew worked for. During the day, we raised £150 for British Heart Foundation and £500 for the cricket club.
On Sunday 27th May we host a game against AFC Hornchurch. On 1stJuly we hold our open/fun day starting at 12.00 all are welcome to come and enjoy some games, make a donation, enjoy a burger and a drink.
There is a 10k fun run on 10th June starting at 10am and a family fun run afterwards. Follow this link for more details. Thames Chase 10K & Fun Run Proceeds towards the Havering Community Forest. It has been a slow start to the season there has been 1 new member and a couple of potential new members.
Romford Cycle Club
8 new members so far in April, with 2-4 expected to sign up by end of the month.
Beginners rides now on Monday’s from the Optimist Pub, Upminster at 7pm, escorted by experienced cyclists and ride approx. 20 miles dependent on the ability of the attendees. We have reinstated group rides on Thursday evenings. Our Sunday morning rides leave Cycle Surgery, Romford at 8am and we offer options for routes dependent on abilities, recent routes have been up to 50 miles.
3 of our members successfully completed the London Marathon and a number of club members have started running together on weekday evenings.
There is funding available for clubs fitting certain criteria and the Jack Petchey Organisation are providing a number of free table tennis tables. Check website for details. www.londonsport.org .
